Want to learn the basics of stone carving in one day and go home with your own work of art? In this one-day summer course, you will create a relief in limestone: a flat sculpture that appears to rise from the stone.
You will learn how to achieve a powerful result using simple means – perfect for those who want to give the craft a try.
What will we be doing?
We start with a short introduction to relief: what exactly is it and how does it work in stone? Then you will design a flower, for example, which you will transfer directly to your limestone. This type of stone is soft enough for beginners, but firm enough to apply details.
Using hammer, chisel and rasp, you learn how to turn a flat surface into a layered form. You work from coarse to fine, learning where to remove and where not to remove, and how to suggest shape and depth. At the end of the day, you will not only have a self-made relief, but also a first feel for this age-old craft.
