Do you love animals and have an interest in stone carving? This summer, we are collaborating with ARTIS to study various animals and translate them into stone sculptures. No prior experience is necessary; however, if you have picked up a hammer and chisel before, this is the perfect opportunity to refine your skills. In this five-day course, you will learn the fundamentals of stone carving and discover how to transform a rough block of limestone into your own sculpture, step by step.
What will you be doing?
On the first day, we will visit ARTIS to observe the animals and create a drawing from a single perspective (front or side) to trace onto the stone. You will also create a small clay “bozzetto” a preliminary study to give your idea spatial form?which will serve as a reference during the carving process. From there, you will learn to carve limestone using traditional techniques. You will practice essential skills such as using different chisels, rasping, and polishing, gaining insight into how to build a sculpture from coarse to fine.
Throughout the week, we will delve into inspiring examples of famous stone sculptors (including some hidden gems). With personal guidance and plenty of room for your own creative input, you will work toward your finished piece?and, of course, take it home after five days.
