This course is designed to help students communicate through audio, still images and moving pictures. We will look into how films and photographs of various kinds communicate ideas, tell stories, and convey artistic expression through images, sounds and montage. This is a fundamentally hands-on course where learning occurred by doing. Therefore, you will be working all week with camera & editing software to explore & apply the visual tools discussed in class through filming simple and insightful exercises.
This course has four areas of focus:
Image: The fundamentals of composition; spatial cues; capturing movement
Sound: The elements of audio; layering sound; sound and the psyche
Sequence: The interaction of sound and picture; Associative montage; continuity editing
Fiction and Non-fiction Storytelling: The essence of narrative; earning the emotional investment of the viewer; storytelling strategies.

For the duration of the course, you may use CREA’s film equipment. We film with digital cameras, and you edit with free editing software on your own laptop.
Please keep in mind: when using the CREA cameras outside of class hours you will need to bring your own SDHC card. During the first class you will receive a thorough explanation regarding the loaning of cameras.
