In this course we will focus on the examination of various fields of photography such as art photography, portraiture, and photojournalism. It is built upon knowledge and skills gained in Photography: Basics and is aimed at photographers who wants to gain practical and inspirational ideas and expand the basic photography knowledge with more advanced techniques and ideas.
Every week we’ll examine the work of a photographer to better understand the complexities of photography as a medium, explore the used techniques, and refresh the basics. We will practice through the use of multiple photography techniques, including cyanotype prints, portraiture, documentary and collage the students will find/understand one’s unique visual voice.
What will we be doing?
The initial lessons introduce fundamental concepts, such as consciousness and an overview of studio equipment and Lightroom. The next lesson delves into style, focusing on grains and emotion, with an examination of a photographer’s work serving as inspiration for style reproduction.
Subsequent lessons cover topics like understanding editing through hands-on experience with Lightroom and dynamic range, experimenting with light and shadows, analysing the philosophical and technical aspects of using a flash gun on a camera, creating a narrative story based on a given text, mastering the art of classic portraiture, understanding typologies, and finally, delving into advanced editing and printing techniques. The lessons combined with the weekly assignments will build creative and technical control and understandings on light qualities. The course concludes with a creative flourish in which you will engage in a photocollage assignment.
