European Parliament Elections 2019

06mei20:0022:00European Parliament Elections 2019SIB lecture

event details

On the 6th of May, we will organize our next monthly ‘lecture’. This time, we will focus on the European Parliamentary elections that are expected to be held between the 23rd and 26th of May. And GroenLinks candidate Eline van Nistelrooij, D’66 candidate Felix Klos and VVD candidate Anouk van Brug will join us!

Traditionally, EU-elections are seen as less important than national elections. This time, the stakes are higher and everything is different. First of all, the elections could symbolize general feedback for the EU as a whole. It is the first election since an EU member state – the UK – decided to leave the EU. The result of the elections could, in turn, have far-reaching consequences for other European institutions and European policymaking. Furthermore, these European elections are held in an environment that is different than usual as populist parties have increased governmental positions. Anti-EU parties could win enough seats to seriously disrupt legislative business in the future.

During this event, we will look at the power and influence of the European Parliament in general, its parties and how the composition in the parliament might change in the coming election due to the rise of anti-EU parties such as Salvini’s League and Le Pen’s National Rally. In addition, we will try to answer the question of whether the elections are a choice for or against Europe, as Emmanuel Macron has insisted. What impact could the elections have for other European institutions? How could the UK leaving the EU change the results and the workings of the European Parliament? And what are the stakes of the election for the EU project in the future?

This time our set up will be a little bit different. There will be in an interactive session with our speakers, so you can get to ask them a lot of questions and learn more about their points of view.

Afterwards we’ll have drinks together, so we invite you to join us in the CREA café!

Access is free if you have a valid student card. If you’re not a student anymore, you can visit the lecture for only 5 euros! You can pick up your ticket at the CREA desk.
