Momentum in the city

Like astronauts on a unknown planet, you will search for the ‘new’ city. What did this uninvited guest do to our city in the last few months? With social relationships, with falling in love and touching, with nature, with the people and their movements?
What does the city look like when we see it through different glasses? Are we looking through different glasses or did we put on the old ones? How are our observation skills? The world news? Social Media? All this information can change our ideas about reality.
This week you will learn to catch and visualize your personal observations. Drawing, painting, writing, everything will come together.
At CREA, there is a big, empty, white wall. This is our headquarters. The starting point is Amsterdams city map as we know it from the ‘old’ days. From there, places will be determined that need more research. You will work both at CREA and on location. Like correspondents, with pencils, chalk and paper, you spread out in groups and work on studies on a small size, that you then take back to CREA. In the meantime, you will get a crash course drawing and painting. You work with different drawing materials, like pensil, charcole, chalk and paint. You learn about composition, making choices, zooming in and out, light and shadow and mixing colours.
While draing and painting, you also collect what happens around you and you can take notes of the conversations you hear around you, the sounds you hear and the thoughts in your head.
During the week you work in groups at CREA and slowly the big white wall will fill up with your studies and ideas that get new, bigger, forms through painting, drawing and writing. You create an end piece that, together with those of the other participants, form a new city map of (a part of) Amsterdam.
