Spoken word sits somewhere between rapping, singing and poetry. You don’t have to be afraid of high notes, it’s faster than poetry and you don’t have to stay on your beat like a rapper. In addition, the nakedness of the word makes it the perfect medium to make people feel something about you and your story. What is your need, your opinion, your conviction? What do you stand for (or behind) and what do you want to say to people? Spoken word is mainly used to make people think about things that happen in the world or to tell your own story; things that you experience, that people recognise and think about.
What will we be doing?
You would like to bring your words on paper to life on stage. You want the audience to feel what you are feeling. For the first half of the week, you will write your story in different forms, looking for your motivations for telling it. Expect this to get personal. In the second half of the week, you work on the recitation. You will make yourself vulnerable and learn to show your nakedness: how do you want to show yourself? You will also learn to connect with your audience, breaking through the fourth wall.
