Pulse is a unique percussion workshop based on improvisation and bursting with creativity, energy and fun.
During this week, under the direction of conductor/percussionist Remco Menting, you and your fellow students will make live percussion music by reacting to each other while improvising. In this process, everyone is equally important and the conductor has a guiding function.
How will we proceed?
In this summer course you will become familiar with the hand sign language “Rhythm and Percussion with Signs”, which was developed by Santiago Vazquez (Argentina).
This language has given rise to hundreds of percussion groups and workshops worldwide. Workshopleader Remco himself brought this to the Netherlands.
For this way of making music, a specific set of instruments has been composed. The percussion instruments, which come from all over the world, all have their own role within the whole.
For example, there are surdos (Brazil), djembe’s, doundouns and sabars (West Africa), and congas (Latin America). All these instruments complement each other in sound, pitch and function, which is particularly suitable for the process of improvisation.
During the summer course, the participants learn the language of symbols, improvisation, learn to play the percussion instruments technically, and for those who wish, there is the opportunity to conduct. Theory about rhythm will also be covered, such as different time signatures and subdivisions, polyrhythm and polypulse, clave theory and timing.
