Acting is the best-paid job in a film set for a reason. No one is more necessary than actors to tell our stories. But why do we cry or laugh when we watch a film? Is it because of the actor’s performance or is it something else? The word “actor” comes from “action”, which is exactly what the word “drama” means in Greek. “Actors” are not “emoters”. Creating an emotional reaction from your audience is the filmmaker’s job, not theirs.
Without the temptation of putting that burden on them, in this class we will explore the tools at our disposal to create a response from the audience. Through simple exercises and examples, we will briefly explore how color, composition, light, editing, sound or even production design can guide our audiences through a powerful emotional journey. These exercises will lead to a 3-minute final short film of any genre without any actors involved!
