Acting is the best-paid job in a film set for good reason. No one is more necessary than actors to tell our stories. But why do we cry or laugh when we watch a film? Is it because of the actors performance or is it something else? The word ‘actor’ comes from ‘action’, which is exactly what the word drama means in Greek. Actors are not ‘emoters’. Creating an emotional reaction from your audience is the filmmakers job, not theirs.
What will we be doing?
Without the temptation of putting that burden on them, in this class we will explore the tools at our disposal to make an emotional impact on the audience, working without actors. Through simple exercises and examples, we will briefly explore how colour, composition, light, editing, sound or even production design can guide our audiences through an emotional journey. These exercises will lead to a three-minute final short film of any genre.
