Have you been walking around with an idea for a documentary for some time, but don’t know how to approach it? Or do you just want to learn how to write a film plan for a documentary? Then this course is for you.
How do you decide what is interesting for a documentary? How do you deal with your own involvement in the subject? How do you develop a specific angle and how do you organize the ‘information’ you want to transfer into a convincing, cinematic whole? How do you make creative use of archive material or reenactment? And, how does a film plan in a documentary relate to reality, from recording to editing?
What will we be doing?
We cover different styles and dramatic principles by watching film fragments. We also discuss the differences and similarities with educational programs.
Through exercises you learn how to develop an idea in different steps: from premise/logline, synopsis/outline to a treatment/scenario. You learn about the approach to your research, converting research into scenes and the art of ‘visual’ writing.
Finally, you will learn how to make your approach as a director, part of your film plan and how to present your preliminary film plan to third parties.
